MOScout Daily Update: House Passes Stadium, Aid Bills - JP Calls for New Special Session - Cupps Antics and more…

House Passes Bills

The House, as expected, passed the special session bills with no changes.

Speaker Jon Patterson said he was “mindful” not to risk sending anything back to the Senate.  “I think a second Senate vote on the Senate Bill 3 would have been impossible just the way things, the political climate after that vote.”  He was perhaps talking about the outrage leveled at the Freedom Caucus by their base.

There were several House members who changed their vote between this stadium bill and the amendment during regular session.  This bill passed more narrowly.

KAC: Tragedy Bridges Political Divide

Rep. Kimberly-Ann Collins spoke to a dead quiet chamber as she recounted the devastation that her district has seen.  In a display of how tragedies can bring people together, she said that she and Rep. Brad Christ, the sponsor of the police takeover bill that she vehemently opposed, had bonded during the terrible ordeal.

Meanwhile

Rep. Scott Cupps continued his antics preparing two amendments for debate…

·       Any athletic and entertainment facility project authorized under this section for the retention of a national football league franchise that is financed in part by state appropriations shall be named and known as "The Bishop Davidson Stadium".

·       Any national football league franchise that accepts any state appropriations authorized under this section for the financing of an athletic and entertainment facility project shall be named and known as "The Bishops"

Patterson Calls for New Special Session

In his post-session press conference, Speaker Jon Patterson said he was “very concerned” about the “property tax patchwork” that results from the special session.  He’s going to appoint an interim committee to propose a solution, and is asking Governor Mike Kehoe to have a special session run concurrent with Veto Session for that purpose.

I do intend to appoint an interim committee to focus especially on property taxes.  Its sole purpose will be to look at the property tax problem that we have in the state.

You go round to any of the counties… I was talking with the governor this morning he said he went to a county and they're bringing up property taxes, of course in Jackson County this is a huge problem.  I would say it goes to crisis levels.

So I think what I’d like the committee to do is look at it, find legislation proposed, and again I would call on the governor during our September veto session to concurrently have a session that for legislation that would address the property tax problem.

eMailbag: Senate 30

One MOScouter previews the oppo file in Senate 30… Good luck to Brian Gelner trying to run to the right of Rep. Melanie Stinnett [in Senate 30.] He is already on record from his last race of opposing ending Obamacare in Missouri, opposing increased abortion restrictions, wishy washy on school choice, and his strong opposition to the conservative caucus which he would "never join".  During his last race Team Trent successfully made much ado about Gelner's executive role with the National Beer Wholesaler Association where he oversaw their significant political contributions to Maxine Waters, Adam Schiff, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer.
